Funded PhD Scholarship – University of Galway
Project Title: Phytate-utilising bacteria for soil health and plant growth
Location: University of Galway, Ireland
Start Date: 1 September 2025
Application Deadline: 30 May 2025, 17:00 (Irish time)
Reference Number: PHD GSO 007-25
Project Overview:
This fully funded PhD position is part of a vital research initiative addressing Europe’s reliance on rock phosphate for agriculture. The project explores the genetic mechanisms by which certain bacteria degrade phytate—a naturally occurring, plant-unavailable form of phosphorus in soil—into forms accessible to plants. The overarching aim is to develop microbe-enhanced biofertilizers as sustainable alternatives to traditional phosphorus inputs.
Research Objectives:
Uncover the genetic pathways responsible for phytate degradation in soil bacteria.
Assess the prevalence and importance of different phytate-degrading systems across ecosystems.
Design and evaluate microbial biofertilizers that reduce dependence on rock phosphate.
Supervision & Environment:
