PhD Position in Microbiology – CBSA Research Unit, Université de Caen Normandie, France
Project Title: Proteoglycan and Glycosaminoglycan Metabolism in Enterococcal Opportunism
Location: Université de Caen Normandie, CBSA Research Unit (UR4312)
Start Date: 1 October 2025
Application Deadline: 30 May 2025 (23:59 UTC)
Contract Type: Temporary, Full-time
Contact Email: cecile.muller@unicaen.fr
About the Project:
The project focuses on understanding the role of proteoglycan and glycosaminoglycan metabolism in the virulence and resistance of Enterococcus spp., a genus of opportunistic, Gram-positive pathogens involved in healthcare-associated infections. This ANR-funded research aims to characterize specific enzymes suspected to contribute to bacterial survival and pathogenesis.
Research Objectives:
Genetic Tools Development: Construct mutant, complemented, and overexpressing Enterococcus strains; purify target proteins.
Metabolic Activity Characterization: Analyze enzyme functions involved in glycan metabolism.
Pathogenicity Studies: Evaluate enzyme roles in enterococcal virulence and antibiotic resistance.
Eligible Fields to Apply:
Microbiology
Cell Biology
Molecular Biology
Biochemistry
Biomedical Sciences
Infectious Diseases
Bioinformatics (supporting knowledge is beneficial)
Candidate Profile:
Master’s degree (or equivalent) in microbiology or related field
Laboratory experience in Gram-positive bacteria
Strong skills in cellular and molecular biology, microbiology, and biochemistry
Proficiency in GraphPad Prism, R, Python, and MS Office
Strong written and oral communication skills in French and English
About the Host Lab:
CBSA Research Unit specializes in antimicrobial strategies, bacterial communication, and antibiotic resistance, with strong expertise in ESKAPE pathogens, including Enterococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The team includes 34 permanent members and is structured across five thematic axes.
