About the Position
The Department of Marine Technology at NTNU is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to conduct research on smart control strategies for marine hybrid-electric power systems. The project addresses advanced marine cybernetics for improving the efficiency, autonomy, and environmental performance of maritime vessels.
Key Responsibilities
Design and development of control algorithms for energy management and propulsion systems
Modeling and simulation of marine hybrid-electric power systems
Integration of cyber-physical systems for real-time control
Contribution to experimental validations and system implementations
Participation in NTNU’s structured PhD research training program
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree (or equivalent) in control engineering, cybernetics, or closely related fields
Background in marine technology or power systems is preferred
The degree must be equivalent to a five-year Norwegian program (120 ECTS at master’s level)
Master’s students in the final phase of their studies may apply, but the degree must be completed before the position begins
Strong academic performance (grade B or better)
Fluent in English (written and spoken)
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in:
Marine electric propulsion systems
Model predictive control or advanced control theory
Simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink or similar platforms
Hardware-in-the-loop or real-time simulation environments
Personal Attributes
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and in a team
Curiosity and motivation for scientific research
Good communication and collaboration skills
