Postdoctoral Researcher in Chemistry in Sweden

Employer: Karlstad University, Department of Engineering and Chemical Sciences
Location: Karlstad, Sweden (50%) and Mission 0 House, Gothenburg (50%)
Contract Type: Temporary, Full-time (2.5 years)
Application Deadline: April 2, 2025
Start Date: June 1, 2025, or as agreed

Job Description

Karlstad University is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher in Chemistry to join an interdisciplinary team working on sustainable cellulose fiber production. The research is part of the Mission 0 House initiative, an industry-academia collaboration aimed at eliminating greenhouse gas emissions in material production.

The role focuses on experimental and computational research into cellulose dissolution and regeneration for textile applications. The successful candidate will explore alternative solvent systems, fiber spinning techniques, and process optimizations to minimize environmental impact.

The position involves 50% research at Karlstad University and 50% at Mission 0 House in Gothenburg, working alongside leading experts in chemistry, textiles, and industry partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct experimental studies on cellulose dissolution and fiber regeneration for textile applications
  • Develop computational models (DFT, molecular dynamics, mesoscale simulations) to optimize cellulose-solvent interactions
  • Perform fiber spinning trials and collaborate with the Swedish School of Textiles in Borås
  • Evaluate the environmental sustainability of solvents and processes with a goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions
  • Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present at conferences
  • Participate in teaching activities (up to 20%) in chemistry and related disciplines

Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science (awarded within the last three years)
  • Strong background in polymer or cellulose processing (e.g., wet-spinning, dissolution studies, fiber characterization)
  • Experience or willingness to develop computational chemistry skills (Gaussian, GROMACS, LAMMPS)
  • Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English

Assessment Criteria

  • Experience in cellulose/polymer processing techniques
  • Track record of scientific publications relevant to the research area
  • Knowledge of computational modeling applied to molecular systems
  • International research experience and conference presentations
  • Teaching experience and training in higher education pedagogy (valued but not required)

Application Process

Submit the following documents via the online application portal:

  • CV and list of publications
  • Personal statement describing qualifications and research interests
  • Copies of degrees, certificates, and transcripts
  • Doctoral thesis and three relevant publications
  • Statement of language skills
  • Contact details of two references (one from a supervisor or scientific colleague)
